The DNA Tech Core recently implemented a new short-read sequencing technology. The AVITI sequencer from Element Biosciences provides medium-scale sequencing at higher quality and significantly lower costs compared to Illumina sequencers. While the sequencing chemistry is very different, the instrument is compatible with Illumina libraries and files.
Two new sequencers have been installed in the Genome Center, both deliver highest read accuracies: The PacBio REVIO long-read sequencer and the Element Biosciences AVITI short-read sequencer.
Please join us for the UC Davis Revio Launch Party on Wednesday, April 12th. Expect great talks on genome assemblies and pan genomes - and of course an introduction to the new high-throughput sequencer.
Dear DNA Tech Core clients, the last day before the holidays on which we can receive sequencing samples will be Friday, December 18th. The lab will be mostly performing COVID testing between the holidays. We will open again for sequencing on January 4th.
We Wish Everybody Safe and Happy Holidays!
Following yesterday's Shelter-In-Place orders, the DNA Technologies Core has to now ramp down all non-essential lab work. For safety and legal reasons, we have to reduce the staff present in the lab to the minimum, effectively suspending the lab operation of the DNA Tech Core until April 7th. Projects currently on the sequencers will be finalized and data distributed.
We are pleased to announce the 10x Genomics and UC Davis DNA Technologies & Bioinformatics Cores' joint grant program is accepting applications from UC Davis Researchers now!
This Single-Cell Pilot Study Program award covers library preparation and bioinformatics support for a 4 sample pilot project using one of these single-cell sequencing applications from 10x Genomics:

The new PacBio Sequel chemistry (V3) enables High-Fidelity Long Reads: The chemistry enables significantly longer polymerase reads which can be used to sequence molecules of 10 kb and 15 kb length with 99.9% accuracy. The V2 reagents are discontinued.
Thanks to the new chemistry the PacBio technology is now optimal for the sequencing of even the longest amplicons. To enable multiplexed amplicon sequencing the DNA Tech Core is now offering
HOLIDAY HOURS: We will be closed on the university holidays December 24th, 25th and 31st as well as January 1st.
We expect difficulties with the receipt of shipments in the week between the holidays. Best arrange shipments to arrive by December 20th.
We finally have a new online equipment reservation system ready-to go! The new PPMS system will also be used by other Campus Cores in the near future.
Stratocore PPMS is now used to book and reserve the folllowing shared instruments: Bioanalyzer, Covaris and Bioruptor sonicators, BuePippin, PippinHT, Plate Reader, Fluidigm Access Array, Sciclone NGS liquid handling robot. The instruments are available weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm.
